Suratkal

Surathkal is a suburb of Mangalore city located on National highway 17 (now renumbered as NH-66) in the Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka state, India. It is a municipality merged with Mangalore City Corporation. The principal claim to fame is the beach and the Surathkal Engineering College and The beach is clean and unspoilt by tourist traffic.

Most interesting part is the active lighthouse situated on the beach. It can be seen from within only between 4:30 to 6 p.m. It offers a scenic view of the seashore and coastal Mangalore. The name Surathkal is derived from "shiratakal" meaning "headstone" in Tulu. The famous Sadashiva temple is built near Surathkal beach, next to the light house. Surathkal beach is clean, quite and beautiful. Surathkal is well connected by road, train. Other attractions are Mangalore Sea Port, Mangalore New Airport.

Surathkal is located on the coast and has a hot, humid climate the year around. Monsoons are heavy and last for 4 months of the year. The best time to visit Surathkal Beach is during November February when the heat and humidity is tolerable.
